Reconstruction needs prompt more trades training

The Government says it is working to boost trades training to cope with the rebuilding of Christchurch.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce visited Christchruch Polytechnic (CPIT) on Thursday, where he said last month's earthquake would spark a change in tertiary education provision.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee, who was also part of the visit, says Christchurch will provide opportunities for what he calls the biggest reconstruction job in New Zealand's history.

Mr Joyce says the Government is looking at scaling up trades training, not just in Canterbury but around the country.

Mr Joyce and CPIT heads also discussed the situation concerning international students in Christchurch.

He said there has been a significant decline in numbers since the earthquake, which is of concern as Christchurch plays a big part in the international student community.
