Police to stop recovering vehicles from CBD

Police will stop recovering cars from earthquake-hit central Christchurch from Wednesday.

The Vehicle Recovery Team has retrieved 5033 vehicles from the severely damaged CBD since the quake on 22 February.

Senior Sergeant Graham Reeves says people who still have vehicles that were parked in the central city at the time of the quake need to contact police as soon as possible.

Nineteen vehicles have been identified as either too damaged or inaccessible to be recovered, while 89 at Hagley Park have yet to be claimed.

Any cars remaining after Wednesday will be towed to a secure location.

Mr Reeves says police have gone the extra mile for owners, including starting cars with flat batteries and changing tires to get vehicles back on the road.

People are advised to contact the Christchurch Central Police Station.
