Flooding in Bexley not expected to recur

3:05 pm on 19 April 2011

Civil Defence says flooding which occurred in Bexley on Monday night should not happen again.

CD infrastructure director Michael Aitken says the flooding was caused by a high tide forcing water up storm water drains.

The drains are usually protected by a number of valve flaps. However, they appear to have been damaged by the 22 February earthquake and subsequent silt.

Mr Aitken says the flaps have now been fixed and will be regularly checked to ensure they are working.

The next high tide is 5.30pm on Tuesday and Civil Defence will monitor the situation.
