Christchurch Casino set to reopen

Christchurch Casino is set to reopen within weeks now that cordons around it have been reduced.

The casino has been closed since the earthquake on 22 February.

Chair Barry Thomas says some repairs are still to be done, but an engineer's report shows the building is structurally sound and safe to work in.

He says they should be able to reopen the main gaming room with the tables and slot machines by the end of May, as well as the bar and dining area. The top floor will take longer to reopen.

In April, 500 employees were given the option of taking redundancy or going on leave without pay.

Mr Thomas says a number took the redundancy option, but believes there are still plenty of people to operate the casino when it reopens.
