The Government has extended pre-earthquake operational funding for Christchurch schools until the end of this year.

Schools will continue to receive full funding for the number of pupils they had before the devastating quake on 22 February.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the extension provides certainty and stability for schools until the end of the year.

Some 4060 students have returned to the South Island city since the quake, 992 have moved within the city, while 5103 are still enrolled in other schools throughout New Zealand.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says double-funding will also continue, with schools around the country still being resourced for enrolling Christchurch students.

The funding announcements are on top of the Government's guarantee to protect existing teacher numbers until the end of the year, she says.
