Red zone letters coming next week from Govt

The Government is sending letters to more than 5000 households in quake residential red zone of Christchurch requiring information about the home, ahead of next month's buy out offer.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee made the announcement on Friday morning.

Red-zone residents will receive the letter on Monday, asking for their consent to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority to access information on their mortgages and insurance providers.

The information will be used in preparation for the government's buy-out offer, which Mr Brownlee says is expected to be made in mid to late August.

Mr Brownlee said the orange zone in Kaiapoi and Pines Beach will be the next area to have their properties determined.

If the area is zoned green, he said it means the land is safe to live on.
