It is still not known when a decision will be made on the final resting place for unidentified remains of victims of the February earthquake.

Some remains from the Christchurch earthquake have not been identified, despite months of work by the police's Disaster Victim Identification team.

The identities of most of the 181 people who died in the 22 February quake have been determined but no identifiable trace has been found of four people and some remains are so damaged they cannot be linked to a specific person.

Police say the identification process is continuing, though they hope it will be declared finished soon.

Once that happens, the Coroner and police, in conjunction with the victims' families, will decide on what will happen with any unidentified remains.

It is likely that they will be interred at a shared grave at Avonhead Cemetery, which is planned by the Christchurch City Council.
