Government help for quake accommodation

The Government has announced it will help people who live in Christchurch's residential red zone whose temporary accommodation insurance cover is running out.

Most insurance companies' temporary accommodation cover lasts a year, meaning cover for people who were forced from their homes following the 4 September earthquake will expire next month.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says those red zone residents will receive Government funding to remain in temporary accommodation.

A spokesperson for the minister says the Government funding will also provides options for red zone residents who have been living in their homes, without services, in order to save their temporary accommodation cover for when they need to move out.

The spokesperson says those residents can now begin using their private temporary accommodation insurance and be confident the Government will step in if that cover runs out.
