Still no access to Christchurch police volunteer base

Police kiosk volunteers in Christchurch are celebrating their 25th anniversary as they look forward to being able to get back into their Cathedral Square base.

The square has been cordoned off since the earthquake on 22 February.

One volunteer was on duty in the kiosk when the quake struck at 12.51pm and assisted distressed people until 6pm that night.

The kiosk is also the base for the Christchurch central city beat section.

Senior Sergeant Gordon Spite says the volunteers have been an integral part of central city policing, and having them there to handle inquiries from the public allows his staff to get out onto the streets.

Once the square is reopened, he says, he is confident the police volunteers will be back.
