Inner-city red-zone tours planned for public

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority is planning to take the public on tours through the inner-city red zone.

The area has been cordoned off since the 22 February earthquake.

Contractors and demolition workers are able to enter the area, and business owners have had controlled access to their buildings.

Local and international media organisations have also been given tours.

The authority says it is aware that many people in Christchurch want to go and have a look at the city centre for themselves.

It says both the safety of buildings and ongoing demolitions have made it too dangerous for tours until now, but over the next few weeks it will be working on a plan to start bus tours for members of the public.
