Minister unhappy insulation not part of earthquake repairs

Minister for Earthquake Recovery Gerry Brownlee is demanding answers from the company in charge of carrying out earthquake repairs over why it's not installing insulation.

Fletcher EQR says its contract prevents it from installing insulation to previously uninsulated houses.

The government has earmarked $323 million for insulating 180,000 homes by 2013, and Mr Brownlee is not happy with Fletcher EQR's stance.

He says the company is allowing homeowners to pay for minor alterations out of their own pockets at the same time as repair work is carried out and he can't see why insulation can't be treated in the same way.

Mr Brownlee says it may be possible for homes requiring repairs to have double glazed windows installed as well.
