Some supermarkets to reopen

Some supermarkets in Christchurch should be open again on Saturday after being forced to close on Friday.

Foodstuffs aims to open New World stores in Bishopdale, Fendalton, Kaiapoi, Ilam, Northwood and Stanmore, as well as South City.

Pak'nSave stores in Northlands, Riccarton and Wainoni are also due to reopen Saturday.

Progressive says its Countdown stores in Northlands, Rolleston, Rangiora and Hornby are open.

Its other stores are closed for cleaning up and damage evaluation.

Progressive's online shopping service in Christchurch is also not operating until further notice.

The Westfield Riccarton shopping centre, which was evacuated without incident after the first earthquake on Friday - is expected to reopen on Saturday.

But the Palms shopping centre in Shirley is closed until engineers can guarantee its safety.
