New Zealand's athletes have won five medals on the third day of competition at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The five medals - three in track cycling, one in swimming and one in triathlon - bring the total haul to 12, and put New Zealand to seventh on the medal table.

The opening ceremony flagbearer, paraswimmer Sophie Pascoe, comfortably won her first event, winning the 200m individual medley.

Pascoe went into the race as the favourite, as both the reigning Paralympic champion and the defending champion from the Glasgow Games four years ago.

She led from start to finish to win by two body lengths, but was disappointed with her time - 3 seconds slower than her world record in the event.

"It was bittersweet at the end there after seeing the time, but that's what racing is all about and I gave it everything I possibly could," she said.

"That's what happens when you have very high expectations of yourself and you want to be able to back these up. I have to recover now and obviously try and back up for Monday."

Pascoe will next race on Monday in the 100 metre breaststroke.

New Zealand's success at the velodrome continued, with three medals bringing the total haul to nine.

Sam Webster claimed his second gold of the Games by winning the men's sprint. Webster beat Scotland's Jack Carlin by two races to nil in the best of three race final.

Webster has two sprint titles at the Games following his men's team sprint gold with Eddie Dawkins and Ethan Mitchell on Thursday night.

Campbell Stewart won silver in the men's scratch race, beaten to gold by Australia's Sam Welsford.

And Emma Cumming won bronze in the women's time trial. She rode a personal best and did not expect to win a medal.

"It's pretty overwhelming to come away with a bronze medal from a Commonwealth Games but the girls who rode before me were absolutely outstanding."

New Zealand won the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games triathlon mixed team relay.

Australia defended their Glasgow gold, and England took the silver.

The New Zealand team of Nicole van der Kay, Ryan Sissons, Andrea Hewitt and Teyler Reid finished the race in 1:19:28, about two minutes behind the leaders.

Now Hewitt gets to finally have a celebratory glass of champagne.

"I can't remember the last time i got to have a glass of wine...this is definitely the first one this year."

It's only the second time the relay has been included in the Commonwealth Games and it will be included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the men's basketball, the Tall Blacks led the Australian Boomers for much of the game, but went down 79-73.

Joelle King has advanced to the semi-finals of the squash women's singles, beating Indian 8th seed Joshna Chinappa 11-5 11-6 11-9 in 31 mins.

In the weightlifting, Richie Patterson who won silver in Delhi, and gold in Glasgow, failed to complete a lift in the men's 85kg division.

Tomorrow, the athletics programme starts - including world champion Tom Walsh in the shotput, Jo Edwards looking to defend her title in the lawn bowls, and more track cycling and swimming.
