Vanessa Van Uden has been elected the new mayor of the Queenstown Lakes District.
The incumbent mayor, Clive Geddes, has stood down after nine years.
Ms Van Uden says her campaign of cost-cutting and transparency struck a chord with voters.
She took over 5000 votes, ahead of nearest rival Simon Hayes by more than 2500 votes.
