Black Sticks lose third pool match

New Zealand has been beaten 5-1 by the Netherlands in the preliminary round of the Olympic men's hockey.

The result leaves New Zealand in fourth place in Group B, on three points, with two matches to play.

New Zealand got the first point on the board at the Riverbank Arena five minutes into the game, at the hands of Simon Child.

However, the Netherlands equalised ten minutes later when Roderick Weusthof successfully converted a penalty stroke.

The Netherlands scored twice more before the end of the first half to put the score at 3-1 at half-time.

In the second half, New Zealand failed to find the goal while the Netherlands scored twice more.

The Netherlands is at the top of Group B on nine points after playing three matches.

Germany is in second place and Korea in third, although both those teams have an extra game in hand.

New Zealand's next match is against Belgium on Sunday.
