Closing stations not police strategy, MPs told

Senior police managers have told MPs they have no savings target in mind and no major plan to close stations.

Police Commissioner Peter Marshall and his two deputies appeared on Wednesday before Parliament's Law and Order select committee.

Deputy Commissioner Viv Rickard told the committee that police must find savings of $177 million over the next four years, but any further savings would depend on the outcome of wage negotiations.

He rejected the suggestion the police would close stations to save money.

"I wouldn't want us to go down the path of thinking that the police strategy is about getting rid of police people and closing police stations - that couldn't be further from the point."

Mr Rickard said police districts have already had to find savings of 5% and the police college 15%.

The Government has told police they must keep within their $1.4 billion budget and says all government departments are having to manage without extra money.
