Crown applies to extend deadline over raids retrial

11:39 am on 29 March 2012

The Crown prosecutor in the Te Urewera raids trial has applied to extend the deadline for it to decide whether to retry the four defendants on the main charge.

Tame Iti, Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara, Urs Signer and Emily Bailey were last week found guilty on firearms charges at Auckland High Court.

But the jury was unable to decide whether they were guilty of participating in an organised criminal group.

The Crown was due to decide by 18 April on whether a retrial will be sought.

But Crown prosecutor Ross Burns says he has applied to the High Court to have that date pushed out to 8 May.

Mr Burns says the extension is needed due to lawyers' unavailability, partly because of the Pike River Royal Commission resuming.
