Police have named the teenager who died after he was hit by a car in the Christchurch suburb of Woolston.

They say Joshua Lewis Anderson, 14, who lived in the suburb of St Albans was struck by a car at the intersection of Dyers Road and Ferry Road at 6.30pm on Monday.

Detective Sergeant Richard Quested says it appears the Christchurch Boys High School student and a friend were walking on the north side of Ferry Road and as the two boys crossed the road by a roundabout the teenager was hit.

Mr Quested says victim support services are speaking with his family.

He says it is a tragedy for the driver of the car as well.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
