Winston Peters promises a universal students allowance

10:41 pm on 19 September 2008

Winston Peters attracted an attentive crowd of about 250 students when he spoke at the University of Otago this afternoon.

The embattled New Zealand First leader seemed buoyant during his visit to Dunedin, and told students his party would introduce universal student allowances.

He said he has been completely honest about his knowledge of donations to his party, and criticised the Serious Fraud Office inquiry into the matter.

Mr Peters' visit to the campus was briefly disrupted by a streaker.

He responded to an amused student crowd, telling them the law is not mindful of small things.
