'GST off food' petition moving south

4:35 pm on 20 September 2008

A group that wants GST removed from food began taking its petition, already signed by 20,000 people, around the North Island on Saturday.

Auckland group Residents Action Movement started the petition in May.

On Saturday, members set up a stall outside shops in Kaitaia, where the group's chairman, Grant Morgan, said dozens of people signed the petition.

Mr Morgan says the group will be stopping to collect signatures at 16 centres on the trip south to Wellington over the next two weeks.

He says the petition will then be given to supportive Maori Party MPs.

Mr Morgan says because the group fears politicians will not pay attention to the petition, it is considering trying to get 300,000 signatures for a Citizens Initiated Referendum petition.
