Parole decision delayed for killer of seven

A Parole Board decision on whether to postpone further parole hearings for a mass killer for up to three years has been delayed so he can consult a lawyer.

Raymond Ratima was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering seven family members in 1992, including his pregnant sister-in-law and his three sons. He was also convicted of killing an unborn child.

He was denied parole in June after the Parole Board found he had been using drugs in prison.

Ratima appeared before the Parole Board last Thursday in relation to the postponement decision, but was not represented by a lawyer and said he had not consulted one.

He was urged to do so and the parole hearing has been adjourned until November.
