Value of another electricity inquiry queried

Some lobby groups are expressing scepticism over the prospect of another inquiry into the electricity industry.

An inquiry could be ordered by the Cabinet on Monday in response to price rises for electricity in some areas.

It would follow two other inquiries underway by the Commerce Commission and the Electricity Commission.

A coalition representing Consumer New Zealand, Federated Farmers and the Major Electricity Users Group thinks the timing - just before an election - is suspicious, when the Government has had years to investigate the issue.

However, another group representing organisations like Grey Power and Child Poverty Action, thinks an extra inquiry could be useful if it's broadened to all household energy matters.
