A man is in hospital with serious stab wounds after being attacked in his shop in the Auckland suburb of Avondale.

The man was reported to be in a stable condition on Saturday.

The police are investigating the incident, which occurred about 5.20pm on Friday at a Lotto shop. They arrested a man in connection with the incident a short distance from the scene of the attack.

The offender is said to have approached the shopkeeper and stabbed him several times in the upper body.

The Avondale stabbing follows an incident in Otara on Monday in which a liquor store owner was also stabbed.

The shop owner is now facing assault charges after allegedly using a hockey stick to ward off five youths who attempted to rob his store.
