A gang member has appeared briefly in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday after a police officer was shot at in June.

Murray Toleafoa faces charges of attempted murder and using a firearm on a police officer.

He was remanded in custody until August after counsel for the police requested more time to file written statements.

The shot was fired when an officer was trying to retrieve keys from a driver at a routine police stop in central Auckland on 9 June.

The constable was not hit directly, but the bullet was so close he suffered burns to a forearm.
