PM says Defence Force to improve safety

1:30 pm on 7 August 2012

The Government has told the Defence Force to make some operational changes so New Zealand soldiers are safer in Afghanistan but says there is no intention at the moment to send the SAS back there.

Two New Zealand soldiers were killed at the weekend in a gunfight with insurgents and there was an attack on the New Zealanders' base on Monday.

Prime Minister John Key described the situation in Bamyan province as having changed significantly over the past three years, with more insurgent activity and a higher threat level.

Mr Key says while the Government does not intend to send SAS troops back to Afghanistan, that could change.

He says safety changes could include widening the patrolling area of bases.
