A former mental health unit nurse has been fined more than $20,000 for inappropriate behaviour with two female student nurses.

Jessie Wilson was accused of touching, attempting to kiss, and make suggestive sexual comments, while employed as a nurse at Wairarapa District Health Board's mental health unit between August - October 2010.

Wilson denied the accusations but the health practitioners disciplinary tribunal has charged him with professional misconduct.

Wilson was censured and suspended from practising nursing for three months, with subsequent conditions when the suspension finishes.

The tribunal has also ordered him to pay a fine and costs of $21,500.
