The Defence Force has confirmed a bomb scare at Christchurch hospital on Friday after live ammunition was discovered on one of the bodies of the three dead soldiers brought home from Afghanistan on Thursday.

It says the unexploded ammunition was found in one of the soldier's personal protection kits.

The Explosive Ordinance Device team was called to the hospital morgue to remove the ammunition.

The Defence Force is now investigating the sequence of events and processes that took place in repatriating the bodies to New Zealand.

Corporal Luke Tamatea, Lance-Corporal Jacinda Baker and Private Richard Harris were killed by a road side bomb explosion on Sunday.

Following Saturday's memorial service at Burnham Military Camp, their bodies will be returned to their families for private services.
