Griffins factory in Lower Hutt closes

2:28 pm on 17 December 2008

Biscuit maker Griffins is shutting its Lower Hutt factory on Wednesday after 70 years in production.

The company announced in 2007 that it would close because it could not upgrade the plant's ageing equipment.

The production of biscuits and crackers ceased last week and staff have been dismantling plant equipment this week.

The factory's closure will result in the loss of 228 jobs.

Griffins will continue to operate at the remaining site in Papakura, Auckland, where $80 million was this year invested in upgrading equipment and paved the way for up to 80 extra jobs.
