Kaitaia police are looking for a man with a gun who sparked an armed offenders squad callout.
They say the 41-year-old man pulled out a firearm when his car was stopped by police on Duncan Road north-east of Kaitaia on Wednesday afternoon.
He then ran into the bush.
The area was cordoned off, and the staff and pupils at nearby Kaingaroa School were asked to stay indoors while a search was carried out.
The armed offenders squad search was called off at 9pm on Wednesday and the man remains at large.
