Upgrade of NI electricity transmission a step closer

7:05 am on 19 December 2008

An upgraded electricity transmission system in the central North Island is a step closer.

Transpower has submitted proposals for a new double-circuit wire to service a series of geothermal power projects there.

These will add 1000 megawatts of electricity in a zone between Wairakei and Whakamaru.

Transpower outlined its plans for a new transmission line earlier this year, and held a series of briefings with local residents.

The plan has now been submitted to the Electricity Commission for approval.
