Pair saved from burning vehicle

Two police officers in Marlborough have been praised for putting their own safety at risk to pull two people from a burning vehicle.

The police say the vehicle was fleeing from the officers at "well in excess" of 100km/h in a 50km/h zone, on State Highway 1, just north of Blenheim on Friday night.

The vehicle crashed into a truck and its engine caught fire

Tasman District Police Commander Richard Chambers says one of the two people in the vehicle was unconscious when the officers pulled him out.

He says the officers behaved heroically.

An investigation into the crash is under way.
