Funeral plans delayed as second glacier body recovered

7:00 am on 17 January 2009

Funeral plans for two brothers killed at a New Zealand ice glacier will be delayed until the second body arrives home in Australia.

The body of Akshay Miranda was located on Thursday, 10km downstream from where he and his older brother Ashish were crushed to death by more than 100 tonnes of falling ice at Fox Glacier on 8 January.

The brothers were travelling with their parents Ronnie and Winnie at the time of the incident, which occurred after the two had walked beyond warning signs at the West Coast glacier.

The body of Ashish was retrieved, but rescuers said it was too dangerous at the time to dig through the ice to find his brother.

Mr and Mrs Miranda returned to Melbourne with Ashish's body on Wednesday night.

Akshay's body will be taken to Christchurch for a post-mortem examination before being released.

Mr Miranda told News Ltd he would now concentrate on organising a joint funeral for his sons.
