Inmates off Manawatu Prison roof

9:29 pm on 13 December 2012

The final prisoner on the roof of Manawatu Prison has come down.

Two inmates got on the roof of the exercise yard at the jail in Linton, near Palmerston North, about 3pm on Wednesday.

One man was taken to hospital on Thursday afternoon after injuring himself on razor wire as he climbed back down.

Prison manager Peter Howe says the other inmate came down voluntarily later in the day.

Mr Howe says there was no possibility of the pair escaping at any stage, but there will be an investigation to see how they gained access to the roof area.

A similar situation occurred in June, when five prisoners spent up to 24 hours on the roof of a prison in Hawke's Bay before surrendering peacefully.

Manawatu Prison houses about 300 inmates.
