A prominent Far North businessman accused of assaulting young boys has been denied bail.

Daniel Taylor appeared in the Kaitaia District Court on Thursday asking for the second time for bail.

The Child, Youth and Family caregiver and Mormon Church elder has been in custody on more than 20 charges of sexual offending against children.

The judge again refused to grant bail, saying Mr Taylor posed too great a risk to children.

Mr Taylor's lawyer John Munro said his client intends to defend all the charges and will appeal against the bail decision.

A small group protesting at child abuse rallied on the road outside the Kaitaia courthouse, waving banners and handing out leaflets.
