Fijian bus drivers facing deportation

9:16 pm on 1 February 2013

The Tramways Union says it is unfair that 25 Fijian bus drivers are facing deportation because Immigration New Zealand says they are no longer needed.

The drivers have been working in Wellington for the past six years on one-year work visas, renewed annually.

Immigration New Zealand says there is no longer a shortage of drivers and has granted them one more year to arrange their return home.

Evan Keay, the union's Wellington branch president, says many of the drivers consider New Zealand home and have children who have been raised there.

Mr Keay said on Friday that the workers have contributed to society and deserve to stay.

"They've accepted New Zealand society, they're a part of New Zealand society. Their children have received all of their schooling in New Zealand and have been raised within New Zealand.

"They have no understanding of life in Fiji or the hardships that will present upon their return."

Mr Keay expects a number of drivers to appeal against the decision.
