NZEI calls off Christchurch strike action

7:19 pm on 14 February 2013

The union representing primary school teachers has withdrawn its notice to strike in Christchurch on Tuesday.

The NZEI called off the proposed strike after the Ministry of Education offered to work with members to ensure consultation with teachers and schools in any decisions about education in Christchurch.

National president Judith Nowotarski says the union is responding in good faith to the ministry by calling off the strike.

Ms Nowotarski says Christchurch members want to support schools after Education Minister Hekia Parata's announcements on Monday about closures and mergers, and they are planning a rally and march the following day.
