Police warn against porn site scam

9:22 pm on 15 February 2013

People accessing pornographic websites have become the latest internet scamming victims after receiving a fake message, supposedly from police, fining them for clicking on the websites.

Police say they have received a number of calls about the scam, which appears to come from police saying they have been fined for accessing the site and to pay a fee.

At least one person's computer was frozen and they were advised by the scam it would remain frozen until they paid the fee.

Police say they have no association with any of the websites and the messages are a scam.

They are encouraging web users to protect themselves with anti-virus software and to avoid accessing pornographic sites.

Internet safety group Netsafe says users of these sites who have been swindled by scammers might be paying the fake fines to avoid embarrassment.

Netsafe executive director Martin Cocker says porn site users are commonly targetted by scammers.
