Dunedin councillor says stadium costing city millions

A Dunedin city councillor says the city is bleeding millions of dollars in subsidies to its new indoor stadium.

Forsyth Barr Stadium has announced it will host the American rock band, Aerosmith, for a one-off New Zealand show in April, and organisers say the event will bring much needed revenue into the city.

Forsyth Barr Stadium made a $3 million loss last year.

Its management hopes a raft of big events this year, including Paul Simon and Aerosmith concerts, and All White games, will help it break even.

Dunedin city councillor Lee Vandervis says the council is paying up to $19 million a year to run the stadium, at the expense of local projects like library upgrades and community events.

He says the number of events the stadium attracts is irrelevant, if the community doesn't profit from them.
