The United Nations has awarded BNZ chief executive Andrew Thorburn an award recognising his efforts to have greater female representation on the upper levels of the bank.

He is the first New Zealander to win the UN women's empowerment principles benchmarking for change award.

Mr Thorburn said BNZ has been focussed on getting to a point where it has greater representation of women at middle and senior leadership and management.

He said half the bank's executive team is now women.
