A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being doused with petrol and set alight.

Terrance Martin Smith, 55, has serious burns after the incident at a property in the Christchurch suburb of Woolston on Thursday night.

Two men have been charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Jason Barry, 42, and Shay Webster, 20, appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Friday and were remanded in custody until 3 May.

Neighbours of the house in Sullivan Avenue say nine police cars, three fire appliances and an ambulance arrived at the scene at about 6.30pm on Thursday.

They say they saw three men taken away in handcuffs and one taken away by ambulance.

Police have not confirmed if a third person is involved.

Mr Smith is expected to remain in a critical condition for some time.
