A man is in custody after an Armed Offenders Squad callout in the Bay of Plenty.
Shots were fired in the township of Kaingaroa shortly before 1am on Friday after two people were attacked with an axe.
Police say they have serious facial injuries. Other people who tried to intervene were threatened with a sawn-off firearm and shots were fired.
The injured people were taken to Rotorua hospital after armed police escorted ambulance staff into the township.
A man, aged 49, is due to appear in court charged with discharging a firearm and wounding with intent. Police say other charges are likely.
