New trucks for troops

5:53 am on 16 May 2013

Defence is spending $135 million on new trucks to replace vehicles which have been involved in a number of fatal crashes.

The trucks are replacing Unimogs and heavy truck fleets, which have been used for 30 years. Unimogs have long been considered dangerous, with 10 people killed in crashes between 1998 - 2006.

Major General Tim Keating said the new trucks provide greater protection and are known to perform well on the modern battlefield.

Five vehicles will arrive soon, so personnel can be trained before the whole fleet arrives.
