Cold weather coming

8:51 pm on 26 May 2013

A very cold southerly is expected to affect much of New Zealand on Tuesday, with MetService issuing a severe weather advisory on the conditions.

It is forecasting snow to near sea level in Fiordland, Southland and Otago and says gale-force winds are also likely in exposed places, with significant wind-chill.

MetService also warns of damaging south-west gales in the far north of the North Island.

A severe weather warning of high winds has been in place on Sunday for parts of Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.

Those winds, which could peak at up to 120 kilometres an hour, are expected to ease on Sunday night but may return on Monday.
