New Zealand Lotteries has asked Lotto retailers to top selling synthetic cannabis and party pills.

The organisation has written to the 600 independently-owned retailers with Lotto outlets asking them to remove the products from their shelves from July this year.

Internal Affairs Minister Chris Tremain said on Tuesday he is pleased to see Lotto taking a firm stand on the sale of psychoactive substances.

Mr Tremain said K2 and party pills have been linked to serious health effects and anti-social behaviour, including crime and violent offending.
