Silver Ferns win first trans-Tasman netball game

5:50 am on 7 September 2009

The New Zealand netball team have drawn first blood in their trans-Tasman series, beating Australia 53-50 in the first test in Sydney.

The Silver Ferns looked a completely different side to the one that lost twice to the World Seven last month with captain Casey Williams a standout on defence.

The Ferns' centre Laura Langman says composure was the key to victory and the Silver Ferns controlled the match until the last minute.

She says minor unforced errors can win or lose the game, so the Silver Ferns will have to cut them out of the game or they will result in losses.

The next game in the five test series is on Wednesday in Melbourne.
