An apparent Government U-turn that has allowed the Fruit in Schools programme to continue has prompted calls to bring back the rules that would force schools to sell healthy food.
Funding for the scheme, which provides children in poorer schools with a piece of fruit each day, was due to finish last June, but after a review the Government said it can continue.
Nurses Organisation spokesperson Ruth Crawford says the Government should now bring back the Healthy Food Guidelines, which forced schools to ban junk food.
However Health Minister Tony Ryall says there are no plans to do so.
Mr Ryall says is up to schools, not the Government, to monitor what is being sold in tuck shops and schools are doing well enough without the compulsory guidelines.
