A man accused of murdering his brother near Wanganui was excused from appearing in court on Wednesday due to ill health.

David Bourke is facing numerous other charges including attempted murder and assault with a weapon.

His lawyer Steve Winter told the Wellington District Court that Mr Bourke has been assessed as unfit to stand trial, though his situation may improve.

Judge Bruce Davidson remanded Mr Bourke to a psychiatric facility in Porirua for further treatment.

Mr Bourke's next appearance will be in the Palmerston North District Court on 16 December.
