Christmas respite for women fighting eviction

7:32 am on 12 December 2009

Three women fighting eviction from state houses will be able to stay in the properties over Christmas.

In March, 90-day eviction notices were issued to the women living in properties owned by Housing New Zealand in the Lower Hutt suburb of Pomare.

Moves to evict the Farmer Crescent tenants followed allegations that gang intimidation forced a woman and her two children to leave the neighbourhood.

The women were refused permission to take their case to the Court of Appeal in November, but were told they could make a special application to to be heard in that court.

A date for a hearing has been set down for 16 February and a stay of proceedings will remain in place until then.

A lawyer for the tenants, Liz Hall, says the women are relieved they and their families will get to spend Christmas in their homes.
