Meeting to hear progress on Waikato River clean-up

6:45 am on 22 October 2009

Tainui's ambition to clean up the Waikato River should get a boost on Thursday when farmers, scientists and regulators meet for a second Waikato agricultural summit.

Waikato Regional Council says a balance is being sought between economic, environmental and community values.

Sustainable agriculture co-ordinator Alan Campbell told Waatea News the pastoral industry has been a major contributor to degradation of the river in the past, but farmers have been tackling issues like protecting stream banks, erosion control and improving effluent control.

The summit will hear about steps to halt an increase in nutrients and sediment getting into the river.

Mr Campbell said lots of progress has been made and the challenge is to continue that progress.
