Tuhoe hopes Treaty momentum will continue under National

Ngai Tuhoe says it hopes the current momentum of Treaty of Waitangi settlements will continue if the National Party takes office.

The Crown and Tuhoe on Thursday signed terms of negotiations, which begin the process of settling the iwi's Treaty of Waitangi claims.

Tamati Kruger, who chairs Tuhoe's negotiating team, says it's been largely the Treaty Negotiations Minister, Michael Cullen, who has brought Tuhoe to this point.

He says iwi will be watching with interest to see who a National Government might put in a similar position.

National says it would maintain the pace of Treaty negotiations and aims to have all claims settled by 2014.

The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document.

However, Tuhoe is not a signatory to the Treaty and this is only the second time it has entered formal negotiations with the Crown. The document also sets out the objectives for both parties.
